The FDA and ADA deems many of these items safe to use in dental materials and has no restrictions other than Amalgam fillings in pregnant woman and children. These components are however controversial and therefore my philosophy: When in doubt and when controversial, better to avoid and look for safer and proven alternatives.
Holistic dentistry implies that we work with the whole body. In Holistic dentistry, it combines working with your overall health and dental knowledge. Holistic dentistry, according to the dentist's belief, recognizes the body as a beautiful integrated system with each entity connected interdependently to the other systems. As "parts of the body", each part is necessary and interdependent on the other parts doing their "job". Even mainstream dentistry is more and more realizing that there is a connection between your teeth and your entire body : Periodontal disease for example has an impact on your heart and must be treated in its early stages. So what do we do differently than most dentists?
1) NEVER place amalgam fillings, as they contain over 50 percent mercury.
2) Most people, especially ladies might know this from their reaction towards designer jewelry, have a allergy towards nickel and many dental alloys contain nickel, so we leave them out.
3) Match each person to the proper materials.
4) Removing old fillings have been proven to be releasing more mercury than during their many years of service in your mouth.
So to remove them and other toxic materials, I use a special isolating dam which seals the entire oral cavity and only leaves the tooth to be treated outside the dam to be worked at. What that means for you is that the mercury will not be swallowed and the assistant will use her two powerful suction tools to suction all saliva and dental materials.
Keep in mind that European dental studies have found significant higher amounts of mercury in saliva after you eat and especially after you eat hot meals. Some studies suggest that hot food releases mercury in your mouth. In Germany, where I practiced for many years, amalgam is not allowed on pregnant women and children under 9 years old. Although none of the dental students shared my opinion when I left dental school in 1996, I was always the only one who always intuitively asked himself "what is not good for a pregnant women can not be good for a grown adult as well".
And that is how I became more interested after dental school and invested time in learning about alternative ways.
5) We use a safe environment for the removal process and we refer to other doctors and practitioners who share the same philosophies. We strive to make your experience here in our office a pleasant and positive one beginning from the 1st visit which is usually a cleaning/ prophylaxis combined with an initial consultation and examination visit, to the dental treatment itself. During this visit you have time to ask your questions and discuss with me what is best for you.
Of course you can also have a consultation by itself, where everything will be discussed. Another aspect to our "holistic" approach involves those of you who already have some immune system compromise. This would include (but not be limited to) those of you with chronic fatigue, fibromalgia, multiple sclerosis and a variety of other immune systems symptoms. There is a specific protocol from Dr. Hal Huggins that we recommend to follow for the "full mouth restoration" that helps in not further compromising your immune system. If this protocol is not followed, more harm to the immune system can be done by removing amalgam/mercury fillings and nickel crowns.
Our modern world makes it very difficult for us to shield us from the negative factors which can contribute to the overall health. There are many factors that have an impact on our immune system : Heavy metal toxification, stress, electrical interferences all around us, your state of mind , allergies, toxic chemicals and nutritional deficiencies. Nobody can live a perfect life, but do the best you can shield yourself from these negative factors.
- The primary ingredient in silver dental fillings (amalgam) is mercury; if you have silver fillings, mercury is released into your mouth every time you chew, grind your teeth, brush your teeth, etc.
- Chlorella, a single-celled micro-algae, is a very effective detoxification tool to help eliminate accumulated metal toxins, including mercury, from your body
- If you have silver fillings, it would be wise to take chlorella with every meal to support your body's detoxification process and ability to eliminate mercury
Chlorella has a tough outer cell wall that cannot be broken down because we have no enzymes that do that; it is imperative that the manufacturing process break down the tough outer cell wall for you, as this is the only way to make the chlorella biologically active so it can bind to and help eliminate toxins from your body

Silver Fillings in Your Mouth Release Mercury Most people are aware that mercury is a poison, but many overlook the fact that they have this toxic metal implanted in their mouth in the form of "silver" (amalgam) fillings.
I explained on the Dr. Oz show that three out of four adults have silver fillings -- and the primary ingredient in them is mercury. There are 1,000 mg of mercury in the average filling -- this is about 1 million times more mercury than is found in seafood, which is in microgram quantities. Even the conservative EPA and CDC advise pregnant women to avoid high-mercury fish like tuna, due to the well documented adverse effects on fetuses. Mercury is an incredibly potent neurotoxin; it doesn't take much to cause serious damage because it's an absolute poison. If you were to take the amount of mercury in a typical thermometer and put it in a small lake, that lake would be closed down due to environmental hazards. Yet, amounts much higher than that are readily put into people's mouths daily, with many unaware of the risks. It's estimated that 75 percent of Americans are ignorant about the fact that amalgam fillings are actually 50 percent mercury. Worse still, every time you chew you liberate mercury from your fillings. Actually, almost any kind of stimulation can cause your fillings to release mercury, including eating, drinking, brushing your teeth, grinding your teeth and chewing gum. Mercury vapor from amalgams pass readily through cell membranes, across the blood-brain barrier, and into your central nervous system, where it causes psychological, neurological, and immunological problems. Children and fetuses, whose brains are still developing, are most at risk, but really anyone can be impacted. So, as I explained to Dr. Oz, if you have silver amalgam fillings it would be wise to take chlorella with every meal until you are able to have them SAFELY removed by a biologically trained dentist.
If you want to see the vapors released for yourself, watch the shocking video below.

The Art of Holistic Dentistry
Everybody should go to the dentist regularly. Some visit their dentist routinely every six months, and others 'routinely' every ten years. Yes, you are reading it right! there are those who receive dental care once a decade - or whenever their current employer offers dental benefits. others respond to the latest fable. Fable? I don't think so.
Patients are generally divided in two groups. those informed and actively involved in holistic care (to a greater or lesser degree) and those who perceive that anything holistic is far off from the mainstream. For the latter nothing is futher from the truth. Holistic dentistry and mainsteam dentistry go hand in hand. i would even say that holistic dentistry completes mainstream dentistry. So what exactly does a holistic dentist do that sets him/her apart from a mainstream, non-holitic dentist? Are they really so far apart, that you might expect some voodoo dentist healing you with magnets and precious stones, rather than with scientific knowledge, applications and experience?
In my opinion holistic dentistry is an extension of mainstream dentistry. A step futher perhaps, but nevertheless an important step! First, you should know that all dentists are trained as mainstream dentists. Conversely, I can not think of one single dental school that teaches holitic dentistry. Every dentist is trained to cut a tooth at a certain angle, fill a tooth, prepare a tooth for a crown and to take impressions. What dentists are not schooled in are the results of, and the potential consequences, of such treatments on one's overall health. Nevertheless, following dental school, some dentists learn the holistic protocol and choose to treat patients with a complimentary approach to dentistry.
Holistic general dentistry: Allow me to take you on a little journey through holistic dentistry. It is indeed correct that Almalgam or silver fillings consists consist of more than 50% mercury, they cause very little tooth sensi-tivity or nerve reaction; are inexpensive and easy to place. In many regards, amalgam is the ideal filling material. A mainstream dentist, upon diagnosing a cavity, uses a diamond bur attached to a high speed handpiece (yes, the one with the awful high pitch noise), and drills out the old filling and/or decay. The assistant suctions and removes all decayed material and most of the ground down amalgam material to the best of their ability. The problem is, mercury is believed to be a very strong neurotoxin (nerve poison) and may be inhaled and ingested.
A growing number of professionals in the dental community believe that mercury during removal and placement gives out toxic fumes. Without passing judgment whether the mercury in a filling is toxic or not, you as the patient have the right to choose an alternative restorative material. One approach as a holistic dentist is to routinely place a rubber dam (to isolate the tooth to be treated). A rubber dam is a very neat tool to isolate the tooth to be treated from the oral cavity. Furthermore a holistic dentist will place an oxygen mask on the patient's nose, so possible toxic fumes will not reach the patient nasal tract. The treatment room should be well ventilated and circulated and patients might consider doing a "heavy metal cleanse", to get rid of heavy metals in your body (also from past mercury intake such as tuna or sword fish).
Sterilization protocol: Another important attribute of holistic general dentistry is the very limited use of chemicals in the office area and the use of non-toxic serilization procedures for dental instruments. A very effecftive way to sterilize your dental instruments after each use is to use a sterilizer which uses hot distilled water ("heat sterilization") rather than a harsh chemical solution ("chemical sterilization."). You are reading it correct! Simple hot distilled water can actually kill all bacteria and viruses effectively and it is also much safer for the environment since we are not dumping the chemicals into the ocean.
